Sony Music and Warner Chappell filed a lawsuit against Anthropic in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. The plaintiffs seek compensation for tens of thousands of works protected by copyright.

The plaintiffs are seeking up to 150 000 dollars per work, as well as up to 25 000 dollars for each instance of removing identifiable copyright data. At the maximum award, the amount of the claims could reach several billions of dollars.

The case matters because it implicates the cost of using a large portfolio of musical works by an AI developer. So far only a description by The Verge AI is available, not the full complaint or Anthropic's position; therefore the legal bases of the claims and the subsequent course of the process remain unclear.
